A geodesic dome tasting room marks the original five-acre site on Highway 29.
Napa Cellars has been crafting wines in Napa Valley since 1976, rooted in a rich heritage that honors the unique terroir of the region. The winery, located on the original five acres along historic Highway 29, features a distinctive geodesic dome tasting room and a commitment to producing wines that reflect the character of the land. With over 40 years of experience, Napa Cellars continues to create classic interpretations of Napa Valley wines, showcasing the diverse soils and climates that make this area exceptional.
Winemaker Joe Shirley crafts classic Napa Valley wines from fruit sourced across the region's diverse soils and climates. The winery's 1976 founding predates the Judgment of Paris, and the Guided Wine Tasting at $35 offers a straightforward way to taste through wines that prioritize place over flash.

A geodesic dome anchors Napa Cellars, visible from Highway 29 in Oakville on the five-acre property where founder Jack Schulz planted vines nearly fifty years ago. The structure houses a tasting bar inside, though many visitors opt for tables on the grounds that face the Mayacamas foothills to the west. The architecture stands out not for beauty but for oddity: few Napa wineries have chosen a dome, and this one has remained since the early days of the valley's wine boom.

Staff pour the Guided Wine Tasting for $35 either at the indoor bar or at outdoor tables, walking guests through selections that span Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay depending on what's open. The focus is on explaining terroir differences—fruit from Oakville versus Rutherford, for instance—rather than the winemaking process. Pours are generous, and the pace is relaxed enough that groups linger on the lawn after finishing.
