The Setting
The Rhine House, a red-and-white painted mansion completed in 1884, anchors the property with its slate-tiled mansard roof and wraparound veranda. Behind it, the Old Stone Winery dates to 1877, its hand-cut limestone walls three feet thick. The tunnels bored into the hillside in the 1870s run for 1,200 feet, their arched stone ceilings still dripping cool condensation. Gardens planted with heritage roses and century-old oaks line the gravel paths between structures.
The Tasting Experience
The Beringer Estate Tour ($85) includes pours inside the Rhine House, where tasting staff talk about the family's decision to stay open during Prohibition by making sacramental wine. Guides walk groups through the tunnels, then return to the mansion for seated tastings of Private Reserve wines. The Architecture Tour ($35) skips the wine but covers the same ground, focusing on how the brothers designed gravity-flow winemaking before electric pumps existed.
