Founded in 1972 by Bernard Portet and the Goelet family, now led by third-generation owner Olav Goelet.
Clos du Val's fifty-plus years of family leadership across three generations might seem like a long time. Still, set against the grand arc of wine's rich history, it is only a drop in the barrel. With any intergenerational endeavor, there are the twin tasks of preserving and persevering.
The Retrospective Decade Tasting pours 10-, 20-, and 30-year library releases alongside current vintages, demonstrating how Bordeaux-inspired Stags Leap District wines age. Yettalil, a blended expression of their estate, anchors the Past, Present, Future tasting in a secluded cabana on the property.

Hirondelle House serves as the main tasting venue, a structure named for the French word for swallow, where windows frame vineyard rows that stretch toward the eastern hills of Stags Leap District. Bernard Portet chose this site in 1972 after feeling cold air rush through the car window of his borrowed Dodge Charger as he drove south on Silverado Trail. The cabana used for the Yettalil tasting sits apart from the main building, a walk through vines that leads to a more private setting.

Hirondelle House Tasting runs $75 for current releases, poured by estate hosts who trace how Portet's Bordeaux approach shaped fifty years of winemaking here. The Retrospective Decade Tasting ($125) sets older vintages against newer ones, paired with artisan cheeses that help clarify how tannin and fruit shift across decades. For $100, Past, Present, Future Yettalil Tasting moves outdoors to the cabana, where a library pour and the current vintage show different stages of the estate blend.
